In the United States, concerts are gradually returning due to the rapid vaccination process, some with reduced capacity and others with COVID-19 testing at the door.
An event promoter in Florida decided to do things differently. Forbidden from denying entry to unvaccinated people by local governor Ron DeSantis , the owner of Leadfoot Productions, Paul Williams, found a solution to encourage vaccination.
For an event taking place on June 26th with the bands Teenage Bottlerocket, MakeWar , and Rutterkin in St. Petersburg, Williams established a price difference: tickets will be sold for $18 for those who are vaccinated and $1000 for those who have not yet received the vaccine, which is readily available in the United States.
Speaking about the initiative (via Consequence of Sound ), the promoter explained: “We’re just trying to put on a show in a safe way. And they should go and get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families and their communities. I also wanted [the event] to be a vaccine campaign to get those who are on the fence off the fence. I wanted to get young people who want to go to concerts to get their vaccines.”
Williams also commented that the response to his initiative has been quite positive, but reported that he has received threats. Ironizing these aggressive comments, he said that "apparently it's very bad to care about people's safety."
