Formed in 2021 by Gerald Zinnegger (vocals) and Markus Mantau (guitar), with René Chlebnitschek (bass) and Bernd Paptistella (drums) subsequently recruited, the German band Stigma presented themselves to the public with two EPs: Last Order (2022) and First Call (2023).
Their work was very well received, heavily influenced by Alice Cooper and Metallica, and they also cite Type O Negative, HIM, Depeche Mode, The 69 Eyes , and Ghost as cornerstones of their self-described melodic dark rock sound.
Consolidation came with their first full-length album, Second Chance (2025). Composed of twelve songs, the debut album presented a musical and lyrical evolution compared to previous releases – musically, the classic hard rock with modern touches remains unwavering with more punch and catchy choruses; lyrically, it deals with sensitive human themes, but always pointing to a path to be followed, that is, there is always a "second chance".
“It’s much more than just a collection of songs; it’s exactly what the title suggests: a deep retrospective and a vigorous new beginning. If you look at the tracklist and delve into the lyrics, you’ll realize it’s a cinematic and chronological journey that traverses the highs and lows of human existence. It covers the entire spectrum of life: from the first warning signs we encounter, to the bitter pain of broken friendships, to dealing with our hidden inner monsters, to the feeling of detachment and isolation, and finally, to finding our ultimate guide. This project is proof that no matter how devastating a situation seems, or how deep the scar left by an experience, there is always a way to transform that raw pain into powerful art,” the band said in an interview with Wikimetal.
The album is designed for live performance – and deserves a presentation in Brazil
Right from the first listen, some songs with a heavier appeal stand out: “The Signs”, “Pirate” and “Glorious Victory” have great riffs – one of the pillars of the album. “Faraway”, the first single released, has a melodic atmosphere with Gerald Zinnegger whispering parts of the lyrics until the explosion of riffs in the chorus. But even bands with clear musical proposals end up recording songs that deviate from the norm; in the case of Stigma, the excellent “Through The Night”, with a country-like feel, fulfills this role masterfully.
Ultimately, Second Chance is an enjoyable album, giving the impression of being designed for live performance, something Stigma strives to showcase to as many people as possible worldwide. With shows scheduled for Japan at the end of the year, performing for a Brazilian audience is a dream for the band, as stated in an interview: “Going to Brazil is an absolute dream for us, and we are working hard behind the scenes to make it happen as soon as possible. Brazilian fans are world-famous for being the most passionate, energetic, and loud in the entire rock and metal community, and as a band that feeds completely on the energy of live shows, we know that Stigma and Brazil would be a perfect combination.”
