The highly anticipated film depicting the life of Priscilla Presley , wife of Elvis Presley , is scheduled to hit theaters later this year. Priscilla was written and directed by renowned filmmaker Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation ), inspired by the memoir Elvis and Me .
The biopic will not include any of the late singer's music after the company that owns the majority of his estate refused. The filmmaker sought authorization, however, according to a note shared by The Hollywood Reporter , her request was denied.
According to Coppola, the decision doesn't affect the project, it only fuels their creativity. The soundtrack for Priscilla features a careful selection of classic songs, brought to life through the masterful interpretation of Thomas Mars , vocalist of the band Phoenix and Sofia Coppola's husband.
Priscilla brings to the big screen the magic of the adaptation of Priscilla Presley's memoir, titled Elvis and Me , published in 1985, achieving sales success and, consequently, popularity.
Furthermore, it's undeniable that everything surrounding the life and career of the rock icon fascinates the public. Coppola's film is no different and has sparked interest among fans and critics. The film is scheduled to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which takes place between August 30th and September 9th.
After the trailer for the movie Priscilla was released, an employee of the corporation that owns the copyright to Elvis expressed surprise at the project and offered harsh criticism of the teaser, stating that it "looks like a college movie."
On the other hand, Priscilla Presley herself praised the project, demonstrating her full support for the filmmaker: “I am thrilled with Sofia Coppola’s masterful interpretation of my book. She has an extraordinary perspective and I have always been a great admirer of her work. I am sure this film will take everyone on an emotional journey.”
