Through social media, guitarist Phil Sgrosso announced his departure from As I Lay Dying, claiming that recent events have shown that the band no longer provides a healthy work environment.
"After witnessing some troubling behavioral patterns, I realized that I can no longer allow further actions that could negatively affect anyone working in this space.".
With this, the musician asserted that such incidents contributed to his decision to leave the band.
"It is in my best interest to distance myself completely, both creatively and personally, from As I Lay Dying," he revealed.
Phil also commented on the discomfort he felt leaving the band during this turbulent time, but assured that it was the best decision he ever made.
“After 21 years dedicated to this band, I don’t feel comfortable leaving or abandoning what I consider to be my life’s work. […] I feel it’s no longer my responsibility to carry this burden.”.
Layoffs at As I Lay Dying
In addition to Phil, the band lost drummer Nick Pierce , guitarist Ken Susi , and bassist Ryan Neff , leaving only vocalist and co-founder Tim Lambesis .
Throughout the statement published in full, Phil Sgrosso also expressed solidarity regarding the departures of his former colleagues.
"I want to share my full support with Ryan, Ken, and Nick, who have recently made the decision to step away. I am grateful for our accomplishments and friendship over the past 3 years.".
Despite leaving, Phil reiterated that he wishes the band a good start: "I believe that, with the right adjustments and restructuring, it can continue to thrive and explore new possibilities in a healthier environment.".
The musician concluded the statement by thanking everyone for the support he received during the two decades he was part of the band and spoke about the future.
"Thank you to everyone who has shown support for me and the music of As I Lay Dying. I look forward to putting my energy and creativity into new and more positive endeavors in the near future."
