Last weekend, Universal Music held its annual showcase to present the company's latest offerings to the industry, ranging from new artists to film productions.
During the three-hour event, big names from the record label presented short sets interspersed with new releases. Pop artists Lewis Capaldi, Maggie Rogers, and Billie Eilish were among them. But the highlight was director Peter Jackson , who presented a clip from his newest film, which will tell the story of the Beatles recording Let It Be in 1969 – the album was released the following year.
The film was created from 55 hours of audiovisual recordings and 140 hours of audio from the Fab Four in the studio. According to Variety , which was at the event, the film will feature scenes of the group singing, joking, and having fun during the sessions, and even rehearsing some tracks from the Abbey Road .
Jeff Jones , president of Apple Records, was also at the showcase and, upon taking the stage, joked that the Beatles coined the name of the record label before the technology company Apple. Speaking about the film, he confessed that he has high expectations for it, as the original film about the album shows a "depressing version of them during the group's breakup process."
The feature film Let It Be , released in May 1970, was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg and depicts the conflicts the band members faced amongst themselves during the recording of the album. The film is therefore recognized as a documentary about the Beatles.
“We created a completely new film with the purpose of demystifying the idea that the Let It Be were responsible for the band's breakup,” Jones said at the event. Apparently, according to Variety , the film will surprise Beatles fans.
UPDATE: It has been announced that the documentary will be released on September 4th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary band's last album.
