Periphery's music was cited in a trial

Evie Amati, a 26-year-old woman, attacked three people with an axe inside a convenience store in January 2017. According to ABC Sydney, the prosecutor in the case mentioned during the trial that Amati was listening to the song "Flatnine" by the band Periphery before attacking the people, claiming that the track contains "some rather dark themes."

Amati's lawyer argued that his client was not guilty of the attack because she suffers from a mental illness and claimed she was under the influence of a "toxic mixture of hormonal gender transition medication, marijuana, amphetamines, and alcohol.".

Periphery guitarist Mark Holcomb commented on the case: “It’s 2018 and lawyers still think it’s relevant to mention what kind of music a would-be murderer listens to. A few more pertinent questions: What’s your favorite Seinfeld episode? Favorite food? MJ or LeBron? Star Wars or Lord of the Rings? Apple Music or Spotify? Who’s your favorite Golden Girl?”

This is not the first time there has been an attempt to portray a metal song as a motive for crime. In 1986, Ozzy Osbourne was sued for linking the song "Suicide Solution" to the death of a teenager.
