The tape features Paul McCartney as DJ.
Nearly 50 years ago, Paul McCartney recorded a mixtape with various tracks for his Beatles colleagues as a Christmas gift.
Titled Unforgettable , the album features songs by big names such as The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Martha and the Vandellas, and Elvis Presley, and includes McCartney as the DJ.
It was reported that only three or four copies were pressed at the time, but one of them was made available on YouTube, and you can listen to it below.
For decades, the only information we had about the tape was what the musician liked to share. “It starts with Nat 'King' Cole singing 'Unforgettable'. Then I come in as the presenter saying, 'That's what you are, unforgettable! And today will be unforgettable!'”
At the time, Paul was living in central London, England, with his girlfriend Jane Asher's family. “I had two Brenell tape recorders at home and I was making experimental recordings and loops, like those in 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. (…) Once I created something crazy, really strange, just to show the other Beatles, something funny for them to listen to at night at home. Something for my friends, basically. (…) I could stay up until early morning making tapes and only sleep in the afternoon. I did that many times. It was a very liberating time for me. I didn't have to take care of babies or anything like that. I just sat and created.”
