Paul McCartney took time earlier this year to pay tribute to musician Gerry Marsden , lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers , who passed away at age 78, with his death announced this past weekend .
“Gerry was our friend from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group [Gerry and the Pacemakers] were our biggest rivals on the local scene,” Paul reveals about the beginning of the Beatles . “Their unforgettable performances of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' remain in the hearts of so many people as memories of a happy time in British music.”
"My best wishes go out to your wife Pauline and family. See you around, Gerry. I will always remember you with a smile," he concludes.
Marsden died after contracting a heart infection, confirmed DJ and family friend Pete Price .
