Paul McCartney pays tribute to Gerry Marsden: "I will always remember you with a smile."

“He and his group [Gerry and the Pacemakers] were our biggest rivals on the local scene,” Paul recalls about the beginning of the Beatles' career

Paul McCartney took time earlier this year to pay tribute to musician Gerry Marsden , lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers , who passed away at age 78, with his death announced this past weekend .

“Gerry was our friend from our early days in Liverpool. He and his group [Gerry and the Pacemakers] were our biggest rivals on the local scene,” Paul reveals about the beginning of the Beatles . “Their unforgettable performances of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' remain in the hearts of so many people as memories of a happy time in British music.”

"My best wishes go out to your wife Pauline and family. See you around, Gerry. I will always remember you with a smile," he concludes.

Marsden died after contracting a heart infection, confirmed DJ and family friend Pete Price .
