Paul McCartney “didn’t know what to do” when the Beatles broke up: “How can I do anything better than this?”

The musician admitted that he went through a "very difficult" period after the band broke up

In a recent interview with NPR , Paul McCartney admitted that he "didn't know what to do" when the Beatles broke up in 1970.

The composer spoke about the long period of doubt between the end of the band and the beginning of a new project, and the process of accepting the impossibility of achieving something as big as the Beatles again.

“It was very difficult because I didn’t know what to do and I had no idea other than ‘If I want to keep making music, maybe I’ll form another band’,” McCartney recounts. “But how does anyone do that after the Beatles? How can anything be as good as the Beatles? We were a very special combination of talents.”

“It was a question of 'How can I do something better than this?' and I think I needed to think, 'Well, I can't, but if I want to continue doing this, maybe I should think about starting something new,'” concluded the former Beatle.

It was then that Paul McCartney joined his wife, Linda , and formed Wings , which remained active until 1981. “The only thing I could do was start like the Beatles started, from the beginning, playing in some small clubs and things like that,” he recalls. “And that’s what I did with Wings, but it was a very difficult period before deciding – a period when I was kind of lost.”
