In the new episode of the podcast Paul McCartney: A Life in Lyrics , which aired last Wednesday, the 10th, the former bassist and vocalist of the Beatles shared with listeners that his position in the band could have been different if it weren't for an embarrassing moment involving the artist.
While McCartney was talking about the band's early shows, in which he was still the lead guitarist, he humorously recounted the story that made him give up the instrument and almost abandon the stage.
“We did a show and it was the first thing I played, and I was the lead guitarist,” he explained. “ John [Lennon] was the rhythm player. I did a solo and I totally froze. I couldn’t move my fingers. […] It was so embarrassing. My career as a guitarist ended at that moment and I said, ‘Well, I’m not going to do that again. I’m not ready for that. I’m not good.’”
The musician also recalled that he was the one who taught John Lennon his first guitar chords.
“Look, when I met John, he played banjo chords,” he shared. “He didn’t play guitar, because I had to show him guitar chords, since he had been taught by his mother, and she only knew banjo chords,” he concluded.
