On social media, Paul McCartney released a statement explaining the comments he made last week about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a new Beatles song.
The comment was made during an interview with BBC Radio 4 John Lennon 's voice from an old demo, making it possible to use it in the new song.
The idea came from a technique used in the documentary Get Back , directed by Peter Jackson . In it, dialogue editor Emile de la Rey used Artificial Intelligence to recognize the Beatles' voices and separate them from background noise. The same process was used by Paul McCartney on tour, which allowed him to do a "duet" with John Lennon.
“When we started working on what would be the last Beatles song, it was a demo that John had, and we were able to extract it and get the pure sound through AI. Then we were able to mix the track, the way we normally do,” he concludes.
Following the reaction to this interview, Paul wrote: “It’s been great to see such an enthusiastic response to our next Beatles project. Nobody is more excited than we are to share something with you at the end of the year. We’ve seen some confusion and speculation about it. It seems there’s a lot of guesswork out there. I can’t say much at this stage, but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created. It’s all real and we all played around with it. We cleaned up some existing recordings – a process that has been going on for years.”
Just like in the interview with the British broadcaster, Paul did not reveal the name of the song, which will be released as the "last Beatles single".
