Paul Di'Anno , former vocalist of Iron Maiden , gave an interview to The Metal Voice . Lately, the musician has been performing in a wheelchair due to various health problems over the past decade. Two years ago he underwent knee surgery in Croatia. During the interview, he spoke about his struggle to maintain his health and sanity in recent times.

Regarding continuing to perform despite his weakened state, Paul explained: “The blame for the slow progress is mine, because we keep interrupting, going on tour. And sometimes we have to do that, because the damn bills are astronomical, medical care and such. The treatment in particular here in Croatia, because you won't do anything in England. Anyway, you have to do what you can, but we took a few months off to help me. I think it's also for the sake of my sanity, because I've been suicidal about it in recent years. It's too much, I'm not one of those people who should just sit around all day.”

Paul Di'Anno and his struggle to maintain his health

In 2015, the musician suffered from sepsis, and according to him, this permanently affected his immune system. As a result, Di'Anno is more vulnerable to new infections. "If someone sneezes on me, I'll probably get a serious illness," he said.

An example of this happened last year, after finishing a tour, he stayed in Mexico for a while to do physical therapy and ended up catching pneumonia.

Interviewer Jimmy Kay suggested during the interview that going on tour might be better for Paul than staying home, but Paul explained: “It’s bad for your health. It’s not good for me because I’m not getting the physical therapy and lymphatic drainage I need. Or sometimes, but not always. It’s very difficult. And obviously, transferring from A to B, to planes and buses and everything else. But playing live is very good mentally.”
