Paradise Lost in São Paulo: Weight and melancholy in a night filled with classics

Paradise Lost is promoting the album Medusa , released in 2017.

Paradise Lost has combined metal and gothic elements in a career with an impeccable discography of fifteen albums – of which they performed songs from ten – and they returned to the country to promote their album Medusa , released by Nuclear Blast exactly one year ago.

Doom metal shows always bring a different kind of energy. It's heavy, dragging, and evokes a mix of emotions. With a setlist very similar to the one presented in Rio de Janeiro the previous day, except for the song "Enchanment," which replaced "Forever Failure," the band delivered exactly what you expect from a Paradise Lost show: heaviness and melancholy.

The English get excited with more danceable songs like “Erased” by Symbol Of Life and “Say Just Words” by One Second . There are those that are impossible not to hum along to, such as “As I Die” – one of the most applauded songs of the night, the drawn-out “Beneath Broken Earth” and “Medusa”, the classic “Gothic”, the melancholic and beautiful “Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us”, and the heavy “Requiem”.

Can you visualize how versatile Paradise Lost has become? Each song has a distinct purpose, yet they all fit together perfectly. They are all exciting, even if in different ways, and capture the essence of the band. Much of this is due to their solid lineup. Even after 30 years in the business, Paradise Lost still has four members from the original formation: vocalist Nick Holmes , guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy , and bassist Steve Edmondson . Finnish drummer Waltteri Väyrynen Adrian Erlandsson 's departure .

The setlist varied little compared to the last two times the band played in São Paulo: in 2015 at the Overload Music Fest, where they included “Tragic Idol”, “Hallowed Land” and “Isolated”, and the following year at the Epic Metal Fest, where they played “Pity The Sadness” and “Dead Emotion”.

The importance of Paradise Lost in heavy music is undeniable, and after seeing one of their shows you're even more certain of why they are so respected and applauded: They are a living legend of dark music.
