The Northeastern band Papangu

The band Papangu, formed in 2012 in João Pessoa, blends progressive rock with influences from MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and Northeastern rhythms. The group is known for its eclectic sound, which combines forró, maracatu, jazz fusion, black metal, and stoner rock. The name Papangu refers to a traditional figure from the Carnival of Bezerros, a city in Pernambuco.

The sextet is composed of Raí Accioly, Rodolfo Salgueiro, Marco Mayer, Hector Ruslan, Pedro Francisco, and Vitor “Vespa” Alves. They recently released their second album, Lampião Rei , in September 2024, which combines Brazilian influences with extreme metal, progressive rock, and a great deal of experimentation. They also performed at Knotfest 2024 at Allianz Parque in São Paulo.
