The statement was written by a friend of the band.
Pantera released a statement about Vinnie Paul , who passed away last Friday, the 22nd, at the age of 54. Written Grim Reaper guitarist , Nick Bowcott , the text reflects on the drummer's impact on music, comparing him to legends like Keith Moon , John Bonham , and others.
“June 22nd is a sad day for us, as it was the day we lost one of the most talented and influential heavy metal drummers of all time,” the statement begins, “The drums and bass are the foundation of any great band or song. A great guitar riff will get you excited, but what really makes you headbang is the rhythm. That’s why great rock drummers like John Bonham, Keith Moon, Neil Peart, Bill Ward, Mitch Mitchell, Charlie Watts, and Alex Van Halen are considered legends. They not only keep the rhythm and the beat, but they steer the music in the right direction.”
Bowcott still remembers when Vinnie Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell, passed away, "I called Vinnie to offer my condolences (...) And we had a very deep and beautiful conversation and since then our friendship has evolved and we've become great friends."
"Vinnie's talent with the drums was recognized worldwide, but behind that incredible stage presence was a good, kind, generous, and funny man with a contagious smile and a heart as big as Texas. Vinnie's kindness and goodness helped make a difference in the world."
Despite the sadness surrounding the event, Bowcott reveals he is happy that Vinnie Paul is now with his brother, “They are finally together and in a better place (…) I know that now they are drinking while shouting 'Van Halen' [code between the brothers that meant they had put on a great show].”
“Vinnie, thank you for the music, the memories, and the kind spirit. Much love, my dear friend… Rest in peace and please say hi to Dukebox Damage for me,” he says, concluding the statement.
The news of his death was confirmed by Pantera's official Facebook page, and since then numerous tributes have been made to the drummer. Many musicians took to social media to share words of affection for the drummer, while others honored him at concerts.
Although the American newspaper Las Vegas Review reported that Vinnie Paul may have suffered a heart attack before passing away, the cause of death has not been officially released.
