Mattilha released the music video for their new single “Substância” last Thursday, the 4th, transforming addiction, alienation, and self-destruction into a visual narrative. The single references the psychological impact of the Oscar-winning film The Substance. The production uses references to the film starring Demi Moore to discuss the different types of “substances” that numb contemporary society.
According to the band, the idea was born during a conversation about the film, when the reflection arose that "everyone has their own substance." From this concept, the group developed a narrative that explores chemical, emotional, and behavioral addictions, showing how different forms of dependence can gradually consume a person.
“The film was just a trigger for an idea that had been maturing for a while. It's based on experiences we've already had on this journey, along with many other things we've witnessed. Unfortunately or fortunately, because many times (it shouldn't be this way), we learn and grow amidst the pain of this path. It perfectly synthesizes a little of everything that happens nowadays. The blind devotion, the search for the perfect image completely distorted, swimming in absolute shallowness, the escape from this collective madness seeking the blossoming of momentary relief – which each day digs a shovelful of earth into its own grave. It's a brutal journey of life. But despite everything, there's still that time to wake up and be reborn, to rebuild. It's a bad journey, but one that generates hope. Or perhaps, the peace of infinity,” said vocalist Gabriel Martins.
With strong references to the psychological horror of "The Substance" and a powerful message of hope, Mattilha's new work features a cinematic music video that follows Gabriel Martins on a symbolic journey inside an elevator, used as a metaphor for the escalation of addictions and dependencies that numb reality. As the floors rise, the narrative portrays the momentary pleasure provided by these substances and behaviors, followed by the inevitable physical and emotional fall.
