Photographer Fin Costello recently revealed that Ozzy Osbourne was afraid of dogs on the set of the album Bark at the Moon (1983). In addition to the dogs present, the musician dressed as a werewolf, covered in makeup and synthetic hair for the album cover photoshoot.
“In one of the scenes, Ozzy was playing a wolf, on all fours, with Rottweilers chasing him. But what I didn’t know was that Ozzy was terrified of dogs. When he could see the dogs, he could handle it, but when they were chasing him it was completely different!”, Costello said in an interview with Classic Rock .
“By this time, it was five in the morning and eventually Ozzy got up and said he couldn’t do it anymore. We ended up having this bizarre late-night conversation with him dressed as a werewolf, his wife Sharon , who had just given birth about two days before, a nanny holding the baby in a Moses , and a tea lady wandering around the set handing out drinks.”
The photographer also commented on the original idea for the project: “We wanted to make Ozzy look like something out of a Roman epic, wearing a wolf skin on his head as a cape. But Ozzy met the guy who did the makeup for the movie Nightmare On Elm Street and was impressed with his work, so we decided to do a parody of all werewolf movies.”
The session was recorded at Shepperton Studios and lasted approximately six hours. The high cost of £50,000 was due to the numerous pieces of equipment used, such as generator trucks, smoke machines, lighting equipment, and cranes.
