Rock festival will award prizes for original songs and will accept entries from bands across the country

by Juninho

In the second half of 2016, a great initiative promises to shake up and stimulate the original Brazilian rock scene: the Oswaldo Rock Festival.

Oswaldo Rock is a festival that will award cash prizes and widely promote original compositions by Brazilian rock bands. The festival is the result of a collaboration between various partners connected to the food, brewing, and national rock and metal scene industries.

From June 27, 2016 to October 15, 2016, composers from all over the country can register for free by emailing [email protected] During this period, digital materials submitted to the festival's Organizing Committee will be evaluated, and selection rounds will be held where interested competitors can perform live.

On November 5th, 2016, the grand final will take place, where the finalists will compete live for cash prizes. The grand winner will have the opportunity to record a special "National Pride" segment, which will air on one of the Wikimetal podcast episodes. The grand final will feature a show honoring a renowned name in Brazilian Rock, who will be the festival's patron and will personally present the prize to the first-place winner.

Two interesting details are the encouragement of instrumental music entries and a guaranteed good prize for popular acclaim, allowing bands with well-established fan bases a greater chance of winning awards.

All events in the qualifying rounds, as well as the grand final, will have a well-designed and organized structure, featuring award-winning craft breweries, food trucks with excellent gastronomic quality and affordable prices, guaranteeing to raise the spirits of the audience who will attend the performances.

The first selection phase will take place on July 23, 2016, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at Rua Artur de Azevedo, number 1, in the Pinheiros neighborhood of São Paulo, near the Clínicas metro station. Admission will be free throughout the event.

Below you will find the complete rules of the Festival, with more information about registration.

OSWALDO ROCK FESTIVAL – RULES

The initiative aims to foster a creative and original national music scene.

Song entries can be submitted in person on the day of each elimination round or via the festival's official email address [email protected] , from June 27, 2016 until the date of the final selection round on October 15, 2016. The websites www.aaaoc.com.br, www.wikimetal.com.br and the event's official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/827256220742596/ also contain all the necessary information for registration.

1.1. Each composer may submit up to three (3) songs

1.2. Registration is free; there is no registration fee.

1.3. The following will be required for the registration of each song:

a) 6 (six) typewritten copies, on sulfite paper, with the title and the complete lyrics, except in the case of instrumental music. The copies must be brought by the composer or performer on the day of the live performance and must be delivered to the Festival Organizing Committee.

b) By submitting the song, the author(s) automatically agree in full to all items of the Festival regulations.

c) The following information must be sent to the email address [email protected] , along with the lyrics of each submitted song: the full name(s) of the composer(s), contact phone number, email address, a brief summary about the composer and/or performer, and relevant general information about the song's performance (any special precautions or needs that may be required). If available, the submitted song should also be sent via email as an .mp3 file, preferably at 320 kbps quality.

d) The author(s) must fill out and sign the registration form in their own handwriting, which will be provided by the organization before presenting their respective song(s) on the festival stage.

1.4. The registration form and materials will not be returned under any circumstances.

1.5. The OSWALDO ROCK Festival will accept entries and participation of compositions containing lyrics in any language. With the exception of Portuguese, English, and Spanish, authors must submit a Portuguese translation along with the lyrics of each song submitted.

1.6. The submitted songs must be original and unpublished.

I – For the purposes of this law, an unpublished work is understood to be music that has never been edited or recorded in a large-scale commercial run (such as, for example, works with contractual exclusivity and performance rights linked to contracts with record labels and/or third parties), through which the work has been sold in any form.

II – Original music is understood to mean music that is not plagiarized from another existing work, considering both the musical part and the lyrics of the composition.

Sole paragraph – Disrespect for these proposals will result in the disqualification of the song, regardless of the stage of the festival. Lack of originality and absence of novelty, whether in music or lyrics, may be the subject of a complaint by the competitors, provided the document is submitted with sufficient evidence, up to one (1) hour before the presentation of the compositions on the days of the festival.

1.7. From among the submitted songs, 12 (twelve) compositions will be selected for the final phase of the Festival, chosen as follows:

a) Audition by the technical jury of digital material submitted to the Festival Organizing Committee during the elimination period preceding the grand final. The period allowed for registration and submission of digital material is from July 1, 2016 to October 15, 2016. Competitors who choose to compete in the selection phase by submitting digital material will not be required to perform live before the grand final, but may do so if they wish.

b) Elimination rounds will be held between July 1, 2016 and October 15, 2016. The first round will take place on July 23, 2016, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The dates of the other selection rounds will be announced in advance by the festival organizers at least 21 days prior.

c) Each group/band/composer will have up to 50 minutes of stage time available, during which they must perform the original song(s) submitted to the Festival. If there is any remaining stage time after the performance of the submitted song(s), each author may use it as they prefer (they may even present another repertoire of their own choosing until the end of their stage time);

d) The 50 minutes scheduled for the stage already include the time needed to plug in instruments, attach cymbals to the drum kit, and connect pedals and amplifiers;

(e) The festival will offer the following basic structure for the presentation of the submitted songs:

– Stage
– PA
– Monitors
– 1 (one) bass amplifier;
– 2 (two) guitar amplifiers;
– 1 (one) drum kit, including bass drum, floor tom, toms and basic hardware. Each drummer must bring their own cymbals, snare drum and pedals for personal use.
– 5 microphones for vocals

– Regarding stage monitors at the festival: we request that instrumentalists bring their own headphones for individual use, as the monitor system will primarily be digital. Monitors will also be available, but the guaranteed excellent sound quality on stage will be achieved with the use of headphones. The organizing committee will not be responsible for providing headphones to the performers.

f) The grand final can only be contested with a live, in-person performance of the submitted song(s). If the composer or performer is unable to present their respective song live in the final phase on November 5, 2016, they will be automatically disqualified from the festival, opening a spot for competitors on the waiting list.

g) The announcement of the 12 songs selected for the final phase will be made immediately after the closing show of the selection phase on October 15, 2016. A waiting list containing 6 contestants chosen by the jury/selection committee will also be released; these contestants may replace any finalist who is unable to attend the grand final or who has been disqualified.

2. RESULTS OF THE ELIMINATION ROUNDS

After the elimination rounds and the deadline for receiving digital material, the technical jury will select 12 songs for the final phase. The results will be announced on October 15, 2016, and can also be viewed from that date on the websites www.aaaoc.com.br, www.wikimetal.com.br, on the event's official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/827256220742596/, as well as on all other digital platforms and specialized media that support and promote the Oswaldo Rock Festival.

4. OF THE JURY

The ranking of the songs and the awarding of prizes will be the responsibility of the jury, composed of members chosen by the Organizing Committee, from among musicians, producers, journalists, and people connected to the art and culture of Brazilian Rock.

4.1. The jury president will be responsible for directing the judging process, supervised by a person appointed by the festival organization, ensuring the autonomy and proper conduct of the voting process, and will also have the tie-breaking vote. The official communication of the results to the President of the Festival Organizing Committee will be the responsibility of this supervisor.

5. PRESENTATIONS

The selected songs may be performed by the authors or by individuals (performers) designated by them, excluding any responsibility on the part of the Organizing Committee in this regard. It is also established that the same composer may not submit more than three competing songs.

5.1. The order of musical performances will be decided in advance by the Festival Organizing Committee on the day of each elimination round and also on the day of the grand final. At least one representative from each song must be present promptly at 12:00 PM at Rua Artur de Azevedo, nº1 to determine the order of performances for the day. Compositions that do not have their representatives present will be randomly allocated to the schedule through a draw. Composers and/or performers who do not respect their respective performance times after the Organizing Committee's decision will not be able to perform later and will be automatically disqualified.

5.2. Strict control of stage times will be observed on performance dates, with each composer/performer having 50 minutes of stage time available to plug in instruments, attach cymbals to the drum kit, connect pedals and amplifiers, equalize the stage sound, and perform their respective song(s).

5.3. These regulations may not be modified, except in cases of force majeure or unforeseen circumstances, duly proven. Failure to comply with these provisions may subject offenders to the penalty of disqualification of their respective songs.

6. GENERAL PROVISIONS

6.1. The festival will not be responsible for hotel reservations; this is the sole responsibility of the musicians involved.

6.2. The authors of the songs participating in OSWALDO ROCK must provide a short biography to the Organizing Committee, as well as be available for recordings or filming of interviews.

6.3. The festival's management reserves the right to exclude from the competition, at any time, any song whose participants do not comply with the provisions of these regulations and violate the rules of the festival organization.

6.4. The authors of the selected songs and their performers hereby authorize the transfer of rights to exhibit their respective compositions for the purpose of recording albums and videos for the festival, while preserving the copyrights of the composers, performers, and musicians. This authorization includes the exhibition and reproduction of this material on digital media, including any compilations that may be released by the festival's production team.

6.5. For the purpose of producing the album foreseen in the previous clause, the authors of the classified songs and their respective performers hereby authorize the Organizing Committee of the festival to opt for the inclusion of the recording submitted for registration in the festival, instead of any live recording.

6.6. The authors of the classified songs, as well as the performers and musicians of the recording submitted for registration in the festival, authorize its inclusion on the festival website, allowing the music to be listened to even before the event. They also authorize that such recording be the subject of a contest among internet users to choose their favorite songs.

6.7. The simple act of registering a song on OSWALDO ROCK implies acceptance of and agreement with all the terms of these regulations, and constitutes an adhesion contract.

6.8. OSWALDO ROCK will honor a great personality of Brazilian Rock, whose name will be announced in due course, and who will be the "patron" of this edition of the event.

6.9. At the end of the presentation of the 12 songs in the grand final, there will be a show in honor of the festival's patron while the jury meets and decides the winners. The festival's patron will award the festival winner.

6.10. Any cases not covered by these regulations, or not clarified, will be resolved by the Festival Organizing Committee.
