Sarah Thompson , deputy leader of the city council, highlighted that the city has "a fantastic musical culture," of which, according to her, the band "is an important part of that history." Furthermore, she emphasized that, as pioneers, they still "influence musicians today." In this context, Thompson also stated that the band has become synonymous with the city, thus acting as ambassadors, given their "phenomenal careers."
Members also spoke out.
Ozzy Osbourne: “I’m honored and, at the same time, shocked to have been considered for this very special tribute. I’m a proud Aston Brummie through and through. I’m still surprised that nobody outside of Birmingham can understand a word I say, but that always makes me laugh. I started with nothing but a dream, which I shared with Tony, Geezer, and Bill. We never gave up on that dream. My only regret is that my mum and dad aren’t here to see what I’ve become. Birmingham Forever!”
Tony Iommi: “I’m over the moon! What a great honor to be a City Freeman . I’m aware that very few receive this honor. It connects us to the rich history of our hometown, Birmingham, it’s fantastic. I’m deeply grateful for the recognition.”
City Freeman Award from my hometown, the great city of Birmingham. Growing up in Aston, I couldn’t have wished for a better childhood, of top-class schools, friendly neighbours and lifelong friends, and of course, the greatest football team in the world, Aston Villa. Birmingham has given the world some of the greatest inventions and innovations, in science, industry, arts, literature, music and all walks of life, and without Birmingham, the world would be a much poorer place. Thank you, fellow Brummies, for this incredible honour.”
Bill Ward: “Thank you, Lord Mayor and Birmingham City Council. To our legendary fans, a solemn bow. Long live Black Sabbath.”
