Opeth's new album will be released in 2019
guitarist Fredrik Åkesson confirmed to FaceCulture that the band has begun the songwriting process for a new album, the successor to Sorceress , released in 2016. “We’re still in the demo stage,” he said. “I’ve recorded a lot of solos so far and Mikael Åkerfeldt has already written almost 12 songs, so we have more than enough material. But I think we’ll at least try to finish 15 songs.”
According to Åkesson, Opeth hopes to release their 13th studio album in the first quarter of 2019. "I'm not sure if that will happen, but we're working towards it, and the songwriting is going very well.".
Regarding the musical direction, "Compared to the last three albums, I would say that, if I may reveal anything, this album is more complex and energetic.".
“The first filter is the guys in the band. If we like it, we can only hope that the people who like listening to Opeth will like it. That would be good. But if we’re happy with it, we’ll release it; it’s pretty simple. I think that’s kind of a Mikael thing in a way, since he’s the creative director of the band, so I know, speaking for him a little bit here, that he always tries to push everything towards something new. And I think people will like this new album.”
