Once , released in 2004, is the fifth studio album by the Finnish band. Its cover was inspired by the sculpture Angel of Grief by William Wetmore Story. Today, the artwork is installed in a Roman cemetery and has been used as inspiration for several other bands such as Evanescence and The Tea Party.

Tarja Turunen 's last work with her bandmates. After Once , the band invited Anette Olzon and, finally, Floor Jansen to join the lineup, which remains to this day.

As with all Nightwish albums, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen was the main composer, although he had help from Emppu Vuorinen (guitar and acoustic guitar) and Marco Hietala (bass and vocals).

The album is also considered one of their best due to the changes the band made. In "Wish I Had an Angel," Nightwish invited a full choir to accompany them. And in "Creek Mary's Blood," they brought in singer John Two-Hawks to recite a poem in the Dakota language.

Once topped the music charts in several European countries and was the band's first album to enter the American and British charts. In the poll, the album received 27% of the votes, surpassing Wishmaster (2000) which garnered 21% of the votes and Century Child (2002) with 14%.
