Stockton Rush , CEO of OceanGate , wanted to take Pearl Jam on the submersible that imploded en route to the Titanic , according to the new Netflix Titan: The OceanGate Disaster , which premiered last Wednesday, June 11.

The documentary features interviews with former OceanGate employees, experts in deep-sea exploration, and more.

According to Joseph Assi , a cinematographer recruited to film the trip, Rush mentioned including the grunge band Pearl Jam on the expedition as a publicity stunt [transcription via Loudwire ]:

“They needed more exposure, so we came. The submarine they were building was very basic, so the idea was: ‘Make videos to get people’s attention.’ They had crazy ideas, like wanting to take Pearl Jam on the submarine, or he talked about some floating city that could also submerge.”

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster tells the story of the Titan and the discovery of its wreckage at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The submersible imploded during its 3,810-meter descent from the ocean surface to the Titanic's resting place on June 18, 2023.
