Noel Gallagher: grumpy and funny, ex-Oasis member survives (again) the São Paulo rain

Text originally published on the Mad Sound website.

The English musician played hits from his solo career and, of course, Oasis classics.

On Thursday night, the 8th, Noel Gallagher braved the brutal rain of São Paulo when he took to the stage at Arena Anhembi. The British singer came to the country for the Summer Break Festival , which was opened by Foster the People .

The group, led by Mark Foster, spoke earnestly about love – in Portuguese – to the audience, which was clearly mostly waiting for the former Oasis . "Things will pass and get better if we live life with love," says Mark.

Even in the rain, the crowd cheered during the hits “Coming of Age”, “Miss You”, “Don't Stop” and “Pumped Up Kids”. The setlist didn't offer many surprises, not even the recently released single “Worst Nites”. The surprise was their cover of the Ramones . For many, the version was an opportunity to dance and jump more than during Foster's electronic music. But the cover was awkward and chaotic.

At 10 PM sharp, we began to hear the start of "Fort Knox," the opening track from the album Who Built the Moon (2017). With a double dose of songs from the new album, Noel made it clear that he wasn't there to please Oasis fans. Of course, classics like "Little By Little," "Wonderwall"—which left everyone hoarse—and "Don't Look Back in Anger" were part of the setlist, and even with the tiresome feud with his brother Liam , Noel knows he can't escape the success of the band they created together.

“It rained all day! Wow! Nobody warned me it rains in Brazil!”, he says, astonished, even though he experienced a much more intense storm when he came to the country with Oasis in 2006 to promote the album Don't Believe The Truth (2005).

Despite his grumpy image – which is part of his charm – Noel cracked jokes, invited Oasis fans to join him in singing along, and spoke about love, just like Foster the People. The Brit played The Beatles closing the night.

Adorable, detestable, lively, grumpy, funny, and certainly talented. A year after his visit to Brazil with U2, Noel Gallagher shows fans that success doesn't come for free. A great songwriter, Noel holds a special place in the hearts of Brazilians.
