In an interview on The Eddie Trunk Podcast , Rick Allen Nirvana 's sound and the rise of grunge in the 90s affected Def Leppard and influenced the creation of their 1996 album, Slang

“We did a show on MTV , I think, and Nirvana performed as well, and I have to admit, we felt kind of ridiculous,” Allen recounted. “It seemed like that raw, detached sound they were creating kind of mocked the way we were making music a little bit, and that made us go back to our roots and to something that was raw, in the form of Slang .”

Allen also recalled that the album wasn't very well received when it was released, but eventually it became a favorite of many people, including himself.

“I love listening to that album, but it wasn’t something immediate, that happened right away,” he said. “It took a while for people to soften up, but I think it was the right record to make at that time and I think it was a direct result of Nirvana.”
