On a star-studded night, the FireAid event, held to raise funds for the victims of the recent wildfires that devastated Los Angeles, had a historic moment: a surprise performance by Dave Grohl , Krist Novoselic , and Pat Smear , former members of Nirvana . The performance, which featured special appearances by artists such as St. Vincent , Kim Gordon , Joan Jett , and Violet Grohl (Dave's daughter), moved the audience and became one of the highlights of the event.
The performance began with St. Vincent taking over vocals on the iconic “Breed,” accompanied by Novoselic on bass and Grohl on drums—marking Grohl’s public musical return after his hiatus due to a personal scandal last year . Then, Kim Gordon, former member of Sonic Youth, surprised the audience by singing “School,” in a tribute to the late vocalist Kurt Cobain.
Joan Jett raised the energy of the stage with a powerful version of “Territorial Pissings,” introduced by Novoselic. The closing act was Violet Grohl, who, with Novoselic on accordion and Gordon on bass, performed “All Apologies” with sensitivity, reinforcing her talent as an independent artist. The young artist, who recently announced her debut album, has been gaining prominence beyond her collaborations with the Foo Fighters, the band led by her father.
FireAid also brought together names like Lady Gaga , Green Day , Billie Eilish , Joni Mitchell , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Olivia Rodrigo , among others, in a lineup that mixed generations and genres. The event not only raised funds for reconstruction and support for families affected by the fires, but also revived rock classics in a night full of symbolism and solidarity.
While Los Angeles recovers from the environmental tragedy, the unity of artists around the cause — especially the unexpected reunion of Nirvana — has shown the power of music as a tool for transformation and hope.
