Following the news that David Lee Roth had turned down an offer to open for Mötley Crüe on their reunion tour, Nikki Sixx showed understanding for the former Van Halen and criticized the media coverage of the matter.

The revelation was released as a preview of Sixx's new biography, titled The First 21: How I Became Nikki Sixx , to tell the musician's "original story," from childhood to age 21. In the book, Sixx wrote Roth's response to the invitation: "I don't open for bands I influenced," the singer reportedly said .

In a new interview with Forbes , the artist commented on David Lee Roth's attitude. “Well, he probably influenced everyone. That band is a monster. But, you know, it’s understandable. We can all make our choices and all that. I just thought that, with the body of work he has with so many people, it could be very encouraging. I also understand his position,” he said.

Sixx also criticized the media coverage of the case. “It’s interesting to me now, when I give interviews, I’m fully aware that many outlets are looking for clickbait. And what I like about the book is that I don’t feel like there’s much clickbait in there,” he noted. “Maybe that’s a bad thing because, you know, you click the link and someone earns five cents from ads. I don’t want to sell ads. I want to sell an experience of what those first 21 years [of my life] were like. So I tried to be very honest.”
