Nicko McBrain, drummer for Iron Maiden, participated in the Meldown and commented on the recent losses in the music world: Charlie Watts , drummer for the Rolling Stones , and Joey Jordison , formerly of Slipknot.
“Charlie was an incredible timekeeper, a great musician,” said McBrain (via Brave Words ). “There’s a saying I’ve heard a few times that music isn’t just the notes, it’s the space between them. And that’s what Charlie did. He had this great perception of what was behind a groove.”
Nicko also revealed that when he started playing drums, Charlie was one of his biggest influences, along with Ringo Starr of the Beatles. "And then the wonderful Keith Moon came along, and then John Bonham . Those were my first and most important influences."
The drummer also reminisced about Joey Jordison, lamenting the loss and highlighting the former Slipknot member's talent: “You have this guy [Joey Jordison] who plays this incredible kind of tempo [with] a beautiful and lovely bass drum technique. I'm a drummer who plays with a single bass drum, but I can always really appreciate these guys who bring something more. So, having lost both of them [Joey Jordison and Charlie Watts] is really a great loss for all of us.” Listen to the full interview below.
