The English alternative rock duo Nova Twins released their new single “Cleopatra” this Wednesday, the 16th. The song aims to celebrate the identity of the two artists and was written during the height of the Black Lives Matter .
Vocalist and guitarist Amy Love spoke to Kerrang! about the difficulties the duo faces in the industry and within the heavy music scene because of their race. This theme also inspired the creation of "Cleopatra".
“We hadn’t realized the reality of being two Black women playing punk rock. We thought everything was fine, but we suffered a lot of sabotage from people who didn’t understand what we were trying to do, the kind of music we wanted to create, or our look,” she says.
“We had moments when we felt discouraged, like there was something wrong with us and we were crazy, but then we had to become our own superheroes. We had a fantasy world that became reality. So our clothes became our armor,” she concluded.
In 2020, Nova Twins were featured at the Heavy Metal Music Awards and won the award for Best New Band in the UK. In June, they were recognized again by the awards , this time in the Best Video category with "Taxi".
