Fernanda Lira, bassist and vocalist of Nervosa, spoke about the political situation in Brazil.

Fernanda Lira vocalist and bassist for the band Nervosa , strongly criticized Jair Bolsonaro. She called the ultranationalist president "the worst thing" that has happened in Brazil recently.

Bolsonaro, known abroad as the "Trump of the Tropics," has always been very polarizing. His racist, homophobic, and misogynistic attitudes have outraged many Brazilian citizens, including the vocalist.

She commented on the political situation in Brazil to the German press. “This is literally the worst thing that has happened to my country in recent years. In 150 days of government, we have gone back about 100 years in time. With the stupid laws and measures he has taken. And not only politically. But the guy is racist, homophobic, misogynistic. He is the worst thing. And he says all this openly – he doesn't even try to hide it.”

Regarding Bolsonaro's 49% approval rating in January, Lira has a theory. “He has approval because, somehow, today I see that some Brazilians are also like that. Racist, homophobic, and misogynistic. That's horrible. We were marching towards something good, towards equal rights, rights for minorities and things like that. Now it's disappearing.” Fernanda also commented on cases like when Bolsonaro said that “if he had a gay son, he would beat him until he became a man again.”

But Lira said that, in these dark times, she will do everything to express her opinions. She still thinks a social study should be done “to understand what is happening now. You see poor people hating poor people; you see black people hating black people; you see people wanting to have guns to kill anyone who approaches them,” she said. “I think people have gone crazy. We have many countries in the world that now have these crazy right-wing movements. It’s ridiculous.”
