The blasphemy case involving Nergal , frontman of Behemoth , has come to an end. After an appeal, the musician emerged victorious and had his conviction overturned, with the case being dismissed for "offending religious sentiments."
Initially sentenced to pay a fine of 3,000 euros (approximately 19,000 reais), in addition to trial costs, for a shortfall of 678 euros (approximately 4,000 reais), Nergal still risked being imprisoned for two years, but he appealed the sentence and had the case dismissed in the full trial.
The lawsuit was filed in Poland because of a photo published by the Behemoth vocalist in 2019. In the image, the artist appears stepping on an image of the Virgin Mary, generating an accusation of "publicly insulting the object of Christian worship in the form of the Mother of God."
On social media, Nergal described the victory as a sign of a "civilized and democratic" country, emphasizing that "common sense defeats prejudice and fundamentalist agendas."
