This Friday, October 25th, Curitiba will have a memorable night for lovers of extreme metal. The British band returns after a record-breaking show in the capital of Paraná in 2023. Both Ratos de Porão and Krisiun also always draw large crowds when they play in the capital of Paraná.

Their contemporaries, Ratos de Porão, had a similar effect on the Brazilian music scene. On the more metal side, Krisiun grew into a giant from the 1990s onwards and is now one of the leading names in the global scene.

Napalm Death

One of the most important bands in extreme metal, Napalm Death emerged in the 1980s as a punk band that evolved its music to supersonic levels, relying on unrestrained drumming speed and unintelligible screams.

With a bold musical approach, the group became the most important reference point for the style that has since solidified: grindcore. Albums like Scum (1987) and From Enslavement to Obliteration (1988) laid the foundation for an entire scene.

However, the band never stopped daring and testing new sounds. At the beginning of the 1990s, they flirted with hardcore death metal, groove metal, and even rap, and entered the current millennium with a reinvigorated sound, with classics like Enemy of the Music Business (2002) and The Code is Red… Long Live the Code (2005).

Over the past 35 years, Napalm Death has released 17 studio albums, the most recent being Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism (2020), in addition to the EP Resentment Is Always Seismic – A Final Throw of Throes (2022), which surprisingly showcase even more expansive sounds that elevate the group's sound to another level.

Brazilian attractions

Krisiun, originally from Rio Grande do Sul, rose to prominence in the 1990s and conquered the world playing brutal, fast, and technical death metal; currently, they are on tour promoting their album Mortem Solis .

Ratos de Porão conquered the world, becoming a reference and influence for all punk/hardcore and metal bands from every corner of the planet. With over 40 years on the road, their most recent album Necropolítica

Those who attend will also have the privilege of seeing two rising names in the current Brazilian scene: the São Paulo-based band Manger Cadavre?, who bet on a mix of metal, hardcore and crust with a lot of weight and aggression, always presenting a fierce evolution in their studio work and a lot of power live.

The Curitiba-based band Ethel Hunter – with ten years on the road – opens the night, focusing on classic death metal. The band, which has already shared the stage with important international groups, plans to release a new album soon.

A concert-goer since way back when (does a Sandy & Junior concert count?). Born into a "Heavy Rock" cradle (thanks, Dad). A teenager during the Nu Metal era. Shaped by the scrapes and bruises of the Curitiba underground mosh pits. A poser of mainstream bands. Today, a renowned (in my wife's eyes) sommelier of Metal in general. An unrestrained individual in the creation of useless Spotify playlists and with a suspicious taste for other musical genres (who doesn't like the Backstreet Boys?). Former vocalist of several imaginary bands. I love concerts so much that my son was even born at one (Metallica 2022 Curitiba), and envious people will say it was planned. The worst insult I ever committed was calling someone a pagodeiro (a type of Brazilian samba singer). And yes! I know Manowar.
