Gerard Way revealed that Napalm Death played an important role in creating My Chemical Romance 's current Long Live The Black Parade Tour:
The announcement was made during the Sonic Temple in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, May 14th, the day My Chemical Romance headlined. According to Gerard Way, the idea for the Long Live: The Black Parade Tour began years ago after attending a Napalm Death concert.
“That night, I saw something really special. I saw Napalm Death play, and I’d never seen Napalm Death before. And then Barney [Greenway, Napalm Death vocalist] said something that, I know it’s the name of the album, but anyway, he said: ‘man is the ultimate predator.’ I wrote that down and put it on the wall,” said Way [via Loudwire].
Barney's phrase refers to the album Apex Predator – Easy Meat, released by Napalm Death in 2015, which addresses the concept of humanity self-destructing and destroying civilizations.
Gerard Way explained that the message about human destruction directly influenced the universe created for the new tour: “Greenway’s message made me reflect a lot while I was working on Long Live. And that it is man who destroys the world.”
Long Live: The Black Parade Tour takes place in a fictional universe called Draag, controlled by an authoritarian leader. The tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Black Parade, an album released in 2006 and considered one of the most important emo albums. At each show, the band plays the entire album accompanied by theatrical elements, characters, and cinematic scenes.
