Read the letter written by Barney Greenway
Napalm Death frontman Barney Greenway has sent a letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo , asking him to suspend the death sentences of two Australians accused of drug trafficking. Widodo, elected last year, is a metal fan and cites Napalm Death as his favorite band.
See below the letter written by the vocalist:
Dear Mr. Widodo,
I am appealing to you directly to spare the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, the two Australian citizens awaiting their death sentence in Indonesia for drug trafficking. As a fan of Napalm Death, you should appreciate that our lyrics and character challenge the vicious cycle of violence in the world, whether from a state or an individual. If these situations are not challenged and ultimately changed, I believe we will never make progress as humanity.
I understand that you are a leader determined to change things for the better, and I believe that granting clemency would be a great step in the pursuit of improvement. I understand that heroin can be harmful on many levels, but I believe this issue is much deeper and will not be changed by ending people's lives. Again, I respectfully ask that you make a real difference and overturn these sentences.
For hope and peace,
Mark 'Barney' Greenway (Napalm Death)”
