In an interview with Wikimetal, vocalist King Diamond spoke about the upcoming tour in Brazil, where he will be playing the classic album Abigail in its entirety.
Asked why it took him so long to come to Brazil, the vocalist said he had suffered several health problems in recent years, including heart surgery in 2010. After these health setbacks, the vocalist said he had doubts about whether he would ever sing again.
King Diamond said that during his first shows after surgery, he realized he was singing very well: “And now, today, my voice is better than it has ever been in my entire career. This is the result of living differently. Eating healthier, walking five times a week, quitting smoking. I had no idea it would help my voice so much.”
“I haven’t smoked a joint since before my surgery in 2010. At this point in my career, most vocalists lose their voice. Everyone asks the band to adjust the music because it becomes more difficult, it’s natural. But that didn’t happen to me. It’s easier today to sing Abigail’s songs than it ever was in my whole life.”
Besides dietary changes and quitting smoking, King Diamond reveals another explanation for his voice remaining strong: “I’m lucky, but maybe it was the deal I made with the Devil. You know, I had to sell my soul for it.”
