In a recent interview with NME My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way spoke about the resurgence of rock and guitars in pop culture.
"In the 2000s, when we emerged, we saw other bands like Green Day revitalizing themselves. It was the time of rock & roll. Rock dominated."
“But suddenly, pop started trying other things, and we saw many bands reducing their use of guitars. People kept repeating 'rock is dead.' If I got a guitar every time someone said rock was dead, I'd have a huge collection.”
My Chemical Romance disbanded in 2013 but announced a reunion tour in 2019. Those plans were postponed due to the pandemic. Last week, the band's first tour dates were announced for 2022.
"I think when rock music declined, people started to miss hearing guitar in the songs. They missed everything you get from a rock band that you can't get in any other style of music. They missed the sound of the guitar."
Gerard Way concludes: “I think that’s why we’re starting to hear guitars in pop now. It’s a cycle that continues. The sounds are going to get heavier and more visceral because people need it. People simply need it.”
