Numerous protests have been organized in front of the streaming company's offices around the world, demanding greater transparency in its methods. The giant platform has been criticized for its royalty payments, which many consider unfair.
The protests took place in 10 cities across the United States, along with other locations in Australia, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, including the city of São Paulo. The Spotify campaign was launched in October 2020 by UMAW, and has since gained approximately 28,000 signatures from artists and other industry members.
The organizer of the movement, Mary Regalado, says in a statement reproduced by the Clash magazine website: “Spotify has long mistreated music workers, but the pandemic has brought exploitation to a glaring level… The company tripled in value during the pandemic, while failing to increase its payment rates to artists by even a fraction of a cent. Musicians around the world are unemployed now, while the tech giants dominating the industry receive billions. Music work is work, and we are asking to be paid fairly for that work.”
