In honor of the late Rush Neil Peart , Modern Drummer magazine announced the Neil Peart Spirit of Drumming scholarship. The decision was made with the support of Neil's family, who died at age 67 in 2020 from a brain tumor he had been diagnosed with three years earlier.
Neil Peart is currently considered one of the best drummers of all time, not only in metal, but in music in general. The honorary scholarship created in his name offers one student 52 weeks of free drum lessons with renowned professional Dom Famularo , a one-year subscription to Modern Drummer All Access , and a selection of Rush albums from Universal Music Enterprises.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be “a legal citizen of the United States of America between the ages of 14 and 21, not a professional musician, and not part of any contract with sponsors or form of entertainment that, in the opinion of Modern Drummer , conflicts with the spirit of the scholarship.”
Those who meet all the requirements must submit a two-minute video of themselves playing drums along with a short essay explaining why this scholarship “will be meaningful to their life and development as a drummer” and how Neil Peart inspired their playing style.
All submissions must be made by November 26, 2021. For more information, please visit the official website here .
