Mike Portnoy is currently on tour with Sons Of Apollo.
Mike Portnoy spoke in an interview with Biff Bam Pop! about the possibility of collaborating with Rush:
“I don’t think they’ll play without the three of them. I think Rush will always be the three of them. I get asked that a lot, and I, of course, would work with any of them if they wanted, and yes, it would be wonderful. I’ve never done anything with any of them. Neil and I have become very good friends over the years; that’s a relationship I’m very grateful for. And I also know Alex very well. So, yes, God, I mean, yes, that would be incredible! I’ve collaborated with so many people, but I haven’t done anything with any of these guys, so that would be amazing. But they know where to find me.”
Portnoy previously told The Chainsaw Symphony radio program that he understood why Lifeson, Peart, and Lee wanted to quit while they were still at the peak of their playing ability.
“I grew up with Rush. Neil was always my hero back then, and since then I’m honored that we’ve become good friends and I cherish that relationship. And I’ve been a Rush fan all these years. It’s sad to see it end, but you have to respect it, because if they can’t deliver, and if they’re in physical pain and they can’t deliver what the fans want to see, I respect that they go out on top. I don’t like it when I see bands that are just a shadow of what they used to be, and there are some that I’ve seen recently that are still touring… I won’t name them, but some members can barely play their parts, and then they have a lot of other members who weren’t originally in the band, so I don’t know, I’d rather see a band like Rush go out on top and have all the good memories of what they’re capable of.”
