In an interview on Sabian Vault's YouTube channel, drummer Mike Portnoy spoke about his son Max's musical education, who also plays drums in his band Next to None. Portnoy explained how his son became a musician like him:

"When he was two years old, I bought him and my daughter Melody a small drum set. I just put it in the house, and anyone who wanted could go there and play.".

We didn't force either of them into the arts. I think if Max were an electrician, a doctor, or a lawyer, I would support him just the same.

I think he naturally gravitated towards drums. From a very young age, it was obvious he had a natural talent.

Many people think I was the one who taught him, but that's not true. Yes, he grew up watching me tour and see me on stage, and I think that influenced him. But I have to give a lot of credit to his teacher, Todd. I think it was important that he had another teacher.

First of all, I'm not a teacher. I'm a drummer. I don't necessarily know how to teach. And I'm not always at home. I think it's important for a developing drummer to have lessons frequently.

I couldn't be prouder. It's one thing for me to have achieved what I've achieved, but it's a whole different kind of pride when you see your son doing it.”
