Portnoy says Lars is invaluable

In an interview with the website Sticks For Stones, drummer Mike Portnoy was asked about the musical abilities of Lars Ulrich from Metallica. Check out his comments:

“I have great respect for Lars, even though he's someone who's so criticized in the drumming community. For me, his value isn't necessarily in technique, but it has to do with him being part of a musical revolution that he was largely responsible for. He has great value in Metallica, not only as a composer but as a businessman, for his ability to sell the business, and his stage performance – he's a very energetic drummer on stage. I'd rather see someone like Lars Ulrich on stage than a guy who plays 240 beats per minute. That's boring. Who cares about that? (…) I don't judge drummers by their technical ability. I judge them by the value they bring to the music. And what Lars means to Metallica is priceless. So I couldn't care less if his time signature might vary a little, I don't care about that. For me, there's more to a drummer than precision and technique.”.
