Mike Portnoy attended Dream Theater last Friday, the 4th, at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The performance marked Portnoy's first time at a concert by his former bandmates.
Fans who were present at the show reported that vocalist James LaBrie waved to Portnoy from the stage, and the drummer waved back. Portnoy went to the show with his wife and, after the performance, went to meet his friends backstage.
In a social media post, Portnoy shared individual photos with James LaBrie, guitarist John Petrucci, keyboardist Jordan Rudess , and current drummer Mike Mangini. In the caption, Portnoy explained that he was also with bassist John Myung , but didn't take a picture of the moment. "Of course I was with John Myung too. Actually, we went to the show with his family. But we didn't get a picture together," he explained.
Portnoy also shared his experience: “After 36 years, I finally saw my first Dream Theater show! (laughs). It was a wonderful night and a pleasure to spend time with my old friends.”
The drummer, and co-founder of the band, left in September 2010. Later, Portnoy said in some interviews that he left the group to "expand his horizons, musically." He was soon replaced by Mike Mangini.
