Michael Gilbert from Flotsam And Jetsam talks about Newsted in Metallica.

Read the statement.

In an interview with the Canadian program The Metal Voice, Flotsam And Jetsam guitarist Michael Gilbert spoke about Jason Newsted's departure from the band in 1986 to replace Cliff Burton in Metallica . Check out the statement:

Newsted explains why he left Metallica

: “It was a great opportunity for him. I’m still very good friends with Newsted and we talk once or twice a month. Nobody ever got mad at him. It was a decision he wanted to make. We all knew Newsted was the guy for it, we expected it to happen. Jason was the right guy to fill Cliff’s place, actually nobody could have, but Jason brought his own personality to the band. He always had an incredible personality. He’s a great guy to be around, funny, he’s just amazing.”

Regarding whether Newsted regretted leaving the band after the release of “…And Justice For All”, Gilbert says: “I’m not saying this because he told me, but if I were him I would think, ‘What the hell did I do? I’m in this band but I’m not being heard.’ And that’s really bad because the guy is a tremendous bass player.”

Flotsam And Jetsam's new album will be released on May 20th. The first single, Iron Maiden, can be heard here .
