The band will take fans on an expedition to the icy continent.

Metallica fans from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico will be able to enter a contest sponsored by Coca-Cola Zero for a chance to go to Antarctica and see Metallica perform there for the first time.

The contest takes place via Coca-Cola Zero's Twitter account (@CocaColaZeroAr) and must include the hashtag #CocaColaZeroAntartida.

The winners will depart on December 3rd from the port of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, heading towards Antarctica on a 10-day journey that will include lectures with experts about the icy continent, the scientific work being carried out there, and the opportunity to appreciate the incredible landscape.

The Metallica concert will take place at the Carlini Air Base in Argentina, and the audience will need to listen to the music using headphones. The concert will also be streamed online at Coca-Cola.tv and Coca-Cola.fm.

In an official statement, Metallica commented, “After 30 years of career, we’ve had the opportunity to visit practically every place in the world… Except for one. And that’s about to change as we’re ready to go to Antarctica, the only continent Metallica has never played until now!! In partnership with Coca-Cola Zero, we will be playing one of the most special shows of our career near the heliport of the Argentine Carlini Air Base on Sunday, December 8, 2013.”

The first and only rock concert ever held in Antarctica took place on July 7, 2007, at the British Rothera Research Station, as part of the "Live Earth" concert series that took place simultaneously on all 7 continents. The indie-rock band Nunatak played to an audience of 17 people.
