On March 20th, Metallica participated in a tribute to Elton John and Bernie Taupin . The songwriting duo received the Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress Annie Lennox , Garth Brooks , Brandi Carlile , Maren Morris , Billy Porter , Charlie Puth and Jacob Lusk of Gabriels performed , with John and Taupin also participating. Billy Porter hosted the event.

The ceremony opened with a performance by Metallica. They played the song "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" from the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road . A video of the full performance has just been released; see it below.

Metallica and Elton John: a relationship of mutual admiration

Although they have different musical styles, Metallica and Elton John have a long-standing relationship and mutual admiration. For example, in a recent interview, Elton John said he recorded a song by the metal band . Furthermore, the musician has praised "Nothing Else Matters": "For me, that's one of the best songs ever written. It's a song that never gets old. And I couldn't wait to play that track. The string structure, the melodies, the changes in tempo, it's completely dramatic."

But on Metallica's side, its members have also repeatedly praised the "Rocket Man." Lars Ulrich once said: "It's more than inspiring to spend an afternoon in the company of one of the greatest composers and artists in history... Thank you Elton for your generosity and good vibes!"
