Metallica opened the event honoring Sir Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin . The Bay Area giants performed a version of "Funeral For a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding," the opening track from their legendary album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973). In addition to Metallica, the event featured tributes to Joni Mitchell , Annie Lennox , Brandi Carlile, and other artists.
On their social media accounts, Metallica stated: “We had an incredible time yesterday, the 20th, at this year’s #gershwinprize for popular song. We recognize the achievements of our friends Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Watch our performance of 'Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding', as well as the performances of @jonimitchell , @garthbrooks , @brandicarlile , @annielennox and four other incredible artists when the ceremony airs on April 8th on @pbs .”

The songwriting duo was honored for their work with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress. At the ceremony before their performance, Metallica said they were “very excited and proud to be invited to perform at this very special event” and described John and Taupin as “a legendary songwriting team.”
