Metallica performed in Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA, on August 27, 1992.
At the time of the show, James Hetfield was not playing due to the after-effects of an accident that occurred during a performance earlier that month. The band then invited Metal Church guitarist John Marshall to help Hetfield and play the instrument in place of the frontman, who remained on vocals.
The version released by Metallica is part of the re-release of the Black Album , which will be released on September 10th. The new version will also include the raw mix of "The Unforgiven" that the group released earlier this week, and three covers of the song: one by Diet Cig, another by Ha*Ash , and the third by Shor Police, Vishal Dadlani, and DIVINE. The super special edition of The Black Album will only be fully available in September, but Metallica has been teasing fans with some surprises, such as " Nothing Else Matters " sung by Miley Cyrus , and "Sad But True" in two versions: one by singer St. Vincent and the other a country version by Jason Isbell .
Other rare versions of Metallica classics have also been released recently, such as demos of " Enter Sandman " and " Sad But True ," as well as a recording of a 1990 Holier Than Thou
