Metallica will release the S&M2 performances , which featured the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra , in a special box set.
The news was announced by drummer Lars Ulrich last Wednesday, the 10th, during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! . The musician surprised Tracy Bednar , a Long Island nurse who treats children with COVID-19, as part of the #HealthcareHero segment. There, Bednar revealed that to cope with the anxiety of her job, she plays Metallica's "Enter Sandman" at full volume when it comes on the radio. To thank and celebrate the nurse's work, Lars appeared during the conversation with Kimmel.
Ulrich thanked her for her work with the children and, to complete the surprise, he showed her the S&M2 , announcing that it will be released in August and that the band will send her a copy. "You'll be the first to have this special box set," the drummer said.
He even invited her to the next Metallica show in her city, although there's no date set yet due to the pandemic. "I can't wait to meet you and thank you personally for everything you do.".
Last September, Metallica performed two shows with the San Francisco Orchestra, revisiting the songs they recorded with the ensemble 20 years ago for the original S&M. The setlist included hits like "Enter Sandman" and "Master of Puppets," and some rarities such as "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)," a tribute to Cliff Burton .
There is still no information about the release date, other than that it will be released in August of this year. The band should announce the details soon. In the meantime, watch Lars' exciting appearance on Jimmy Kimmel and see a sample of the box set.
