Metallica doesn't know how long they can last

Members talk about the physical exhaustion of the career

In an interview with Kerrang! this month, the members of Metallica spoke about the physical exhaustion the band has been experiencing. When asked how much longer the four will have the energy to perform live, the musicians described their weariness.

“The only thing I feel I can’t avoid is the physical aspect of our job. It’s getting harder and harder. Will we be able to do this at 60?” said drummer Lars Ulrich. Kirk Hammett added: “Tendinitis, ligament atrophy, accidents, repetitive strain injuries, these things take their toll. This is a huge obstacle for each of us individually.”

Lead singer James Hetfield also commented: “There are nights when my throat screams 'No James! Not tonight!', or Lars' shoulder, or Rob's leg, or Kirk's knees. We all have these problems and we deal with them. But we're performing.”

Regarding the possibility of the band breaking up, James commented: “I don’t know what will become of us. I don’t want to end up the same way other bands have ended. We are unique in our journey and we will be unique at the end of it.”
