Metallica Black Album , released in 1991 , continues to generate much discussion among fans and music critics to this day. The album showcased some changes in the group's sound, which didn't please everyone.

These changes, despite generating many negative opinions, propelled the group into the mainstream, winning new fans and increasing their visibility. Many began to call their sound progressive thrash , which, of course, also displeased fans of their previous albums.
