During the recording of the covers album Garage Inc. (1998), Metallica had plans to re-record the song "Prowler," the opening track from Iron Maiden .
The band had played “Prowler” live a few times to introduce encore during the shows on the …And Justice for All (1988) and Black Album (1991) tours.
In an interview with Rock Brigade magazine in November 1998, Jason Newsted , Metallica's bassist from 1986 to 2001, explained why the Iron Maiden song wasn't included on the album's tracklist via Igor Miranda ):
“It was on the original list. When we started rehearsing for this album at Kirk Hammett , we had a list of all the songs we were going to try, and “Prowler” was one of them. But for some reason, we ended up not recording it.”
Newsted pointed out that, for the album, he and the band preferred to include a Diamond Head instead of "Prowler":
“She (“Prowler”) was a bit too obvious and, in the end, it didn’t work out. I mean, I’d rather do any Diamond Head song than do “Prowler”. That’s why I voted for Diamond Head to take its place. Besides, Lars Ulrich was also determined to do a Diamond Head cover. Not to mention that we want to keep putting money in the guys’ pockets.”
Although "Prowler" was left out of Garage Inc. (1998), Metallica recorded a cover of "Remember Tomorrow" from Maiden's first album for the compilation Maiden Heaven: A Tribute to Iron Maiden Kerrang! magazine in 2008.
The cover of “Remember Tomorrow” by the thrash metal giant was included in the deluxe edition of the album Hardwired…To Self-Destruct (2016).
